NCE313 - Revising Italy: Travel Writing and the Italian Tradition
Italy is a country with deep historical roots. Italy is comprised of twenty different regions—and each region has its own distinct identity (food, dialect, history). In this course, we will use a variety of contemporary texts (1991-2011)—films, documentaries, and non-fiction writings—to examine these issues. From the ongoing debate over the "national" identity to the fiercely protected and idiosyncratic regional identities, we will use primary and secondary sources to explore these fascinating conflicts. After our preparations, students will travel to Italy and travel not only to Genoa and Venice but also throughout Tuscany (including Luca, Sienna, Volterra, and the small towns in the hills of Chianti. Our home for three weeks will be centered in the most beautiful of cities, Florence. From the Duomo to Santa Croce, we will visit the spectacular nuances of this incredible city.  We will also make the short trip to the hills of Fiesole—founded in the 8th century BC, and the site where an ancient Roman amphitheater is still used today.

All students will be provided a museum card that grants free admission to the major museums of Florence and allows student to avoid long queues.  Local transport and housing will be provided by International Studies Institute Florence.
