Program Description:

Harlem & Bronx Immersion: May 13-21, 2018

Spend two weeks in Harlem/the Bronx working in schools. Learn about the rich cultural and socio-political history of Harlem and the Bronx, NY, the New York City education system and urban education, and explore the multi-faceted cultural dimensions of New York City.
Tentative Itinerary
Sunday, May 13:
Flight to NY
Walking tour (informal, lead by Professor Kretchmar) to get your bearings and get a basic introduction to NY
Get settled and explore
Group dinner
Monday, May 14:
School setting: 7:45-3:45pm
Group dinner and reflection
Tuesday, May 15:
School setting: 7:45-3:45pm
4:30pm Harlem Walking Tour (includes Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture)
Dinner: On your own
Wednesday, May 16:
School setting: 7:45-3:45pm
4:30pm: Full group (early) dinner and reflection
5:30-8:15 Harlem Gospel Tour/Wednesday Choir Service
Thursday, May 17

Afternoon and dinner on your own
Friday, May 18:

Full group dinner & panel with staff from community organizations in Harlem & the Bronx
Saturday, May 19 & Sunday, May 20:
In pairs/groups: Complete cultural scavenger hunt across the city. This include visiting a selection of cultural neighborhoods (i.e., Little India, Brighton Beach, Chinatown, Greenpoint), finding and experiencing a number of cultural artifacts, visiting a museum, and participating in a free cultural event of choice.
Sunday morning breakfast and discussion, all other meals of your own
Monday, May 21:
Visit different school site: 8am-noon
Full group lunch and reflection
