Harlem & Bronx Immersion: May 9-17, 2019

Spend two weeks in Harlem/the Bronx working in schools. Learn about the rich cultural and socio-political history of Harlem and the Bronx, NY, the New York City education system and urban education, and explore the multi-faceted cultural dimensions of New York City.
Tentative Itinerary
Thursday, May 9:
Flight to NY
Walking tour (informal, lead by Professor Kretchmar) to get your bearings and get a basic introduction to NY
Get settled and explore
Group dinner
Friday, May 10:
School setting: 7:45-1:15pm
Group lunch and reflection
3pm-5pm Harlem Walking Tour (includes Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture)
Dinner on your own
Saturday, May 11 & Sunday, May 12:
In pairs/groups: Complete cultural scavenger hunt across the city. This include visiting a selection of cultural neighborhoods (i.e., Little India, Brighton Beach, Chinatown, Greenpoint), finding and experiencing a number of cultural artifacts, visiting a museum, and participating in a free cultural event of choice.
Saturday morning breakfast and discussion, all other meals of your own

Harlem Wellness Center (CU alumni owned): Yoga class & discussion with owner
Full group dinner and reflection

School setting: 7:45-4pm
